Since 1922, it has operated 7 di ff erent locations (currently two locations, 332 Center St. in Chardon and 7180 Cen- ter St. in Mentor) and grown and expanded alongside the Mentor community. Its Mentor location sits on 27 acres of land with 13 buildings. om Kirk, the current President, started with the company in 1996 as Mentor Installed Services Manager. “A lot has changed in the past 100 years,” says Tom. “We have become much more e ffi cient just in the past 3 years with technol- ogy and embracing change. Traditional privately-owned lumberyards have been slow to change. We’ve decided that Mentor Lumber is no longer going to stay the same.” In 2022, this holds true - with improvements to their Point-of-Sale system, Mentor Lumber now utilizes their updated computers, as well as their delivery management systems to improve on delivery e ffi ciencies between the two stores. “We have implemented extensive training for our new team mem- bers that is tailored to Mentor Lumber speci fi cally, completed a brand-new conference center for training team members, and orga- nized and identi fi ed all inventory with location codes,” says Tom. He hopes to continue the momentum in the new year while develop- ing a philosophy for excellent customer service and top-notch prod- ucts, aligning Mentor Lumber with the best brands in the industry, and hiring and training individuals that are hardworking and pas- sionate about being successful. “We have several things to share that I believe could be bene fi cial to the community and our customers,” says Tom. “Our Mentor Door & Millwork shop I refer to as the best kept secret in N.E. Ohio. We can build almost anything right in our shop.” We’ve also engaged our local high schools and trades schools to work on allowing young adults to intern here or even consider it as a career opportunity. entor Lumber has employed thousands of individuals in North- east Ohio since 1922. One of their goals is to continue this tra- dition and attract talent from Mentor, Chardon, and its surrounding communities with great job opportunities. Their focus is to become the best privately owned lumber yard in Northeast Ohio, with innovative thinking and a great team of individuals!
